DERMAL CORROSIVITY

Corrositex™ Corrosivity Assay

  • The Corrositex™ continuous time monitor assay evaluates the potential for dermal corrosivity of a test article as measured by its penetration through a calibrated biobarrier into a chemical detection system. The time necessary to penetrate the biobarrier is compared to a classification chart to determine corrosivity/noncorrosivity and to identify the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) packing group.
  • The USDOT currently accepts Corrositex™ as a test to assign subcategories of corrosivity packing groups for labeling purposes according to the UnitedNations transport guidelines. However, the USDOT limits its use to specific chemical classes, including acids, acid derivatives, acyl halides, (poly)alkylamines, bases, chlorosylanes, metal halides, and oxyhalides.
  • Validation statements for this assay have been issued by both ICCVAM and ECVAM, and an OECD Test Guideline is in the final stage of approval.
EpiDerm™ Skin Corrosivity Assay
  • This assay has been developed as a pre-clinical assessment to measure the potential skin corrosivity of a test article using the EpiDerm™ three dimensional skin tissue construct. The test uses tissue survival after two exposure periods, three and 60 minutes, to differentiate between corrosives and non-corrosives. This test has an advantage of not being pH dependent, and thus can address a wide range of chemical classes in addition to acids, bases, and acid derivatives.
