LINZ and ESTIV 2010September 2, 2010The 16th Congress on Alternatives to Animal Testing, 13th Annual Congress of EUSAAT (European Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing) and 16th International Congress on In Vitro Toxicology will be held September 2-4, 2010 at the University of Linz in Austria. Please visit the congress website below for additional information. More info Accelerate preclinical drug development by accurately predicting in vivo safety and pharmacokineticsSeptember 28, 2010Over 60% of drugs that fail during clinical development do so for reasons of safety. The cost implications of being able to accurately predict in vivo toxicity and pharmacokinetics are huge, including:
* Reduced attrition
* Improved pipeline planning
* Less time spent in animals
Overall, finding problems with drugs that would only otherwise be uncovered during expensive clinical phases. Please follow the link below for more information. More info EPAA Workshop on Reduction and Refinement Combining Excellence in Science and Animal WelfareOctober 4, 2010The objective of the workshop is to identify examples in reduction and refinement, that improve the quality of science and animal welfare, and that could be further disseminated and used more widely both within and across industry sectors.
The workshop will also make recommendations on future steps to be taken towards the implementation of reduction and refinement methods and strategies that could include opportunities for research in the area of refinement and reduction and/or coordination actions (consortia) that could be supported through public and/or private financing schemes. Please visit the link below for more information. More info 2010 In Vitro Alternatives ForumOctober 18, 2010A forum designed to help scientists meet the challenges of non-animal testing requirements. Attendees will learn how to develop and refine their testing strategies to incorporate the use of
in vitro methods. The requirements in the European Union’s 7th Amendment to the Cosmetics Directive demand that safety data for cosmetic ingredients are generated using only non-animal methods.
In addition, the European chemical regulation REACH will rely heavily on non-animal methods to determine the hazards associated with new and existing chemicals. More info Animal Welfare and Scientific Research: 1985 to 2010 October 25, 2010October 25-26 in Bethesda, MD.
This two day symposium will celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of two and a half decades of biomedical research conducted under the U.S.
Government Principles, the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations. The first day of the symposium will consist of sessions focused on the advances in Animal Housing Facilities, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, Education and Training, and Veterinary Care. An evening session will feature a keynote address by Charles McCarthy titled "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants". On the second day, biomedical researchers and policy experts will discuss the contributions of animal models to human and animal health. More info Series on Best Practices for Regulatory Safety TestingJanuary 19, 2011January 19, 2011: Assessing the Potential for Chemically-Induced Eye Injuries
January 20, 2011: Assessing the Potential for Allergic Contact Dermatitis
William H. Natcher Conference Center - National Institutes of Health
Bethesda, MD, USA
The primary objective of these workshops is to assist participants in gaining a practical understanding of the theory and application of available alternative methods for evaluating hazard potential of chemicals and products that can also minimize animal use and avoid pain and distress. The first workshop will focus on methods for evaluating the potential for chemically-induced eye injuries, while the second workshop will focus on methods for evaluating the potential for allergic contact dermatitis.
