The FDA has published a report following its most recent International Co-operation on Cosmetics Regulation meeting (ICCR-5), in which it outlines the applicability of animal testing alternatives in the four ICCR jurisdictions (Europe, Canada, Japan and the United States). The report describes the current regulatory climate in each region and it discusses a number of currently available OECD validated non-animal testing methods, such as for skin irritation testing and phototoxicity testing. It also outlines the use of tiered-testing approaches to safety assessment and the necessity of this type of testing paradigm as the focus is shifted to the use of non-animal testing methods.
